Sicily is famous for its cloudless
skies and mild winters, and even in the rainest months, November and
December, There are usually many days of Indian summer. July and August
are apt to be very hot, and the scirocco, wich can blow for four of five
days at a time, raises the temperature to 40° Cent. It is often very windy
near the Straits of Messina, and even in Summer the sea here can be chilly.
In march it is possible to combine seabathing with Winter sports. The best
months for travelling in Sicily are March, April, May, June, September,
October and November. During the height of the tourist season (late
June to the end of August) hotels tend to be very crowded. |

Beaches
|
|
The sea around Sicily
has suffured from pollution in recent years, as it has around the rest of
Italy. The industrial zones of Augusta and Gela should avoided by visitors.
The south coast is generally the least spoilt part of the island, with
good beaches especially between Selinunte and Agrigento and in the South
East corner from Marina di Ragusa to Eloro. The rocky around Acireale and
Taormina is popular for sea bathing. On the north coast there are fine
beaches at Cefalů and Mondello, and Capo San Vito offers good bathing. The
best sea bathing of all is to be found on the islands, especially the
Aeolian island and Lampedusa.
